HOW HAVE I LOVED THEE?

How have I loved thee?
Let me count the ways.
I loved you before
the beginning of days.

I loved you with life
from My very own breath.
I loved you with Eden,
filled with My best.

I Loved you with beauty
of sight and sound,
for the eye to behold
and the ear to astound.

I loved you with fruits
full of nectar and flavor.
I loved you with textures
for your touch to savor.

I loved you with fragrance
exotic and sweet.
I loved you with choice:
disobedient or discreet.

I loved you with love
for each other, you and she.
I loved you with peace,
and My Presence - even Me.

Even when you said,
"It's not enough!"
I continued to love
but My love grew tough.

I loved you so much
I endured your sin.
But I grew sick to My stomach
and the day came when . . . .

I no longer could watch;
I missed what had been.
I chose from your best
and one day then . . . .

I flooded the earth;
I cleansed the land.
Then I sent a rainbow
and you began again.

But now I saw
I must take more care,
and more of your burden
I began to share.

I chose a people
among those who flourished;
I made them a covenant;
I nurtured and nourished.

And when they suffered
under a foreign throne,
I sent Moses, my servant,
and brought them home.

I was constantly with them,
never out of their sight,
a Cloud by day,
a Fire by night.

I gave them guidance;
I gave them law -
written instructions
to cover each flaw.

I wrote them a covenant;
I gave them My mark.
and, symbolic of that covenant,
I gave them The Ark.

It carried My Law
and Aaron's rod,
an humble tabernacle
for the Lord their God.

I raised up judges
to rule and reign,
who addressed their conflicts
and brought peace again.

But my love still allowed
the element of choice
and when they rebelled,
I heard their voice.

"We want a king -
like all the rest!"
Even then, as today,
they thought they knew best.

Saul, then David,
I gave them as Sire.
Through love I still catered
to their heart's desire.

Some were faithful, some not
through the centuries and days.
Some followed after idols;
some followed My ways.

But more often than not,
I was ignored and shunned.
So I allowed this people
to become "undone."

They made their choices,
as they felt they must;
they constantly succumbed
to the world and its lust.

 As always happens,
when false idols are craved,
these hollow Gods
invade and enslave.

 My people again suffered
under a foreign throne.
From the clutches of Babylon
they longed to go home.

But some were left
who still heard My voice.
They upbraided the people
for their cowardly choice.

My prophets declared
My truth and My plans
to return this people
to their promised land.

Isaiah, Ezekiel,
Elijah and Jeremiah
proclaimed my promise
of the coming Messiah.

For thru the years

 I was made aware
of just how little
you were able to bear.

 But My laws were firm
and written in stone.
 The shedding of blood
was required to atone.

Tho' it broke My heart;
it had to be done.
 I loved you so much,
I gave you My Son.

 I sacrificed Him
whom I most esteemed
that you, through Him,
might be redeemed.

 I’ve made it so easy,
your salvation, your reprieve.
 All you must do
is repent and believe.

 I removed the barriers
between you and My throne.
You need no courier;
you may come alone.

 I loved you in Eden
when we met and walked.
 I love you still;
please come and talk.

How have I loved you?
It couldn’t be clearer.
My love is reflected
 each day in your mirror.

 I gave you life,
 strong and sure;
 I offer it still,
eternal and pure.

Just tell Me sincerely
you repent of all sin.
Just ask Me humbly
to dwell within.

 Seek Me not only
when you're in a bad way,

but fellowship with Me
each and every day.

For you were not fashioned
to survive alone.
I conceived you; I love you;
to Me you belong.
