AS A CHILD

As a child,
 I could never understand
 why love must
 sometimes reprimand.

 Because of the importance
of the lesson to learn,
 my father's voice
 was sometimes stern.

 I didn't know
 that truth, you see,
 most often hurts
 while setting you free.

 Then came a day
 on which I cried,
 for on that day
 my father died.

 I cried my tears
 and carried on,
 thought part of me
 was forever gone.
I had no father
after that day
 to love my pain
 and hurt away.

 I had no father
to dry my tears;
 I had no father
to calm my fears.

 I had nowhere
 to run and hide
 when the outside world
wounded my pride.

 Tossed to and fro
by life's stormy waves,
 fatherless children
 are pawns and slaves.

Victims all,
 defenseless, alone,
 with no one to champion,
affirm or condone..

The world had wooed,
taunted and teased, and
 finally, had brought me
to my knees.

But then, one day,
 by His Saving Grace,
 I sought and found my
Heavenly Father's face.

  He said, "What you've lost
 I'll soon restore,
 and, as My Child,
I promise you more.

"Never again
will you be alone,
 until the day
when I call you home.

 "I'll hold your hand
and dry your tears;
 I'll soothe your hurts
 and calm your fears.”

 Now, once again,

there is someone dear
 to stroke my heart
and hold me near.

  Now, as God's child,
 I still confront walls
 and still am subject
to stumble and fall.

 But when I perceive
that I've suffered loss,
 I bring my failings
to the foot of the cross.

 I then walk away
and leave them there,
 for He died to absorb
my every care.

 Now, once again,
I need never be alone
 for I'm always welcome
 at My Father's throne.

 And never more

will I wander or roam;
for like the prodigal son,
I, too, am home.

And though I may live
for a long, long while,
I must always approach God
as a little child.

For a child is dependent
 for support and care;
a child follows his father
everywhere.

So trust the Father
 in all you do;
trust Him until
 with this life you're through.

Trust that one day
He'll make all things new
and you'll hear Him say,
"I've been waiting for you!"
