And Yet We Survived Childhood...
We played hide and go seek and kick the can with friends, even at night, we rode bikes without helmets and played kickball in gym class; we kept score and hand winners and losers...trophies only went on special events and to the winner. We weren't always politically correct but if we hurt someone's feelings, we apologized, hugged and move on. We watched the one TV in the house as a family and parent's decision on what to watch was final. We attended church twice on Sunday and once in the middle of the week, had the pastor over after church for dinner and all went back to service together that night.

We got paddled at home and at school if we were disobedient. The paddle was not frequently used but we knew it was there and no one in authority was afraid to use it. No one worried that the cops would be called if a parent gave a misbehaving kid a swat in a store.

We ate the food at school or packed our lunch without food police to determine if our lunch met their standards. We even had a bookstore in grade school where we could buy a snack for a nickle or notebook paper, etc. At one point we could buy an icy bottled Coke from the machine in the basement. After a field trip our teacher might line us up and give us each a nickle to purchase a "cold drink" as we called them.

Kids swam in lakes and ponds and walked all around the area unafraid...and yet we survived...

Them were the good ol' days. That sounds like my childhood even in my days. Things are quickly changing and not for the good. It takes even more effort on parents' part to lead their children in the way they should go, what with all the world around us chasing God away and letting chaos take over. We need to keep this nation's families in our prayers.

We said the Pledge each morning in home room, and someone read from the Bible to start our day.

We said the Pledge too, but by the time I was in school the Bible was out. They still had a big paddle with holes in it, though.
