PostSubject: Bible Study   Thu Mar 01, 2012 3:45 am

I've been trying to do a little Bible study and I don't always understand everything. I have a question that came to mind when reading If God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all one and the same then how is Jesus going to sit at the right hand of God? Thought maybe someone with more experience could tell me how to understand the trinity a little better.

good question miss cleo, i hope this helps.

The Trinity Explained in Four Sentences: A Look at John 1:1-4
by John Shore on January 11, 2009 in Christian Spirituality

John 1: 1-4. (If you’re new to learning the Bible, what “John 1:1-4″ means is that we’re looking at The Book of John [sometimes also called "The Gospel According to John," or, most often, just "John"], chapter one, verses 1-4.)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

I think these first four sentences of John are expressing the reality of the Trinity. It’s saying that God comes in three modes: Absolute and unchanging (“God”), exuberantly creative (“Word”), and personally and specifically inside of each and every man (“the light of men”).

And there’s the ineffable mystery of the three-in-one God. There, in four (heartbreakingly elegant) sentences, is the basis for the entirety of Christianity.

Jesus, of course, is the Word, the active aspect of God; he is God’s unending potential manifested in real space and time. Jesus is the perfect means by which God’s absolute, undifferentiated power is physically, corporeally expressed.

“Word” perfectly captures that extraordinary dynamic. A thing doesn’t really have an identity, hasn’t ever been definitively differentiated from everything else in the world, until it has been named—until someone has attached a unique word to it that, from then on out, refers exclusively to that thing. Naming something marks the finality of the process by which something gains its own distinct, enduring presence; it’s how a thing transforms from unknown to known.

Put in the broadest possible terms, it’s how a thing moves from the world of undivided and absolute God, to the differentiated, relative, human world in which God became Jesus.

“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”

And there it is: by the power of the active, creative force of God, which ultimately personified itself into the Jesus we worship today, all things that ever were or will be were created. Jesus is the Word through which God created us, and our world.

And as to, “In him was life was life, and that life was the light of men.”? That’s just an extremely perfect way of saying that, ultimately, what Jesus brought is the means by which his essence (“the light”) is meant to be fully imparted and awakened in the hearts and minds of all who believe that he was, in fact, exactly who he said he was. I think it’s pointing to the Holy Spirit.

Thank you. It did help somewhat. I guess all will be revealed someday anyway.

I've heard the trinity expressed in many ways. Some say, it's like a marriage where the two become united and become one. Only in this case, the three are united and are one. I think it's much deeper than that though. They are so emotionally connected i.e. their love, devotion and communion with one another, are so united-in ways that we can't even imagine here on earth-that they are literally one. I can only imagine it in my inferior experiences with my husband, because we are very, very connected, but God is capable of taking that to a much higher level. These are only my thoughts on the matter. The Bible doesn't completely explain the matter to us, perhaps, because we are unable to grasp it while we are here on earth. Like you said, it will all be revealed to us someday.

The trinity or three in one as I understand them are just the aspects of God. God the I AM is the creator the designer the very foundation of existence, Jesus is the mediator for man to salvation with God, the Holy Spirit is the direct connection we have with God so we know HE is there and that we are pleasing or displeasing to HIM in our thoughts and actions. The reason Jesus is set next to the Father in the throne room is because even though they are one and the same, Jesus stands for us ( literally ) before the Father. He must be there to help us stand judgement. Of course I'm an adolescent christian so I hesitated to answer this...but I hope it helps. All glory to the Father.

Oh, yes, if you haven't read "The Shack" I highly recommend it. It changed my thinking and understanding in a lot of profound ways. I think that freely is correct with respect to how God relates to us, and there are many other aspects of each entity within the godhead, too. For example, with respect to creation. I recall my pastor teaching us that God thought it, Jesus spoke it, and the Holy Spirit performed it.

I'm reading a book called 'The knowledge of the Holy' by A.W. Tozer and there is a quote that really backs what you said Lora.

"The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and the Son: not made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding." Athanasian Creed

The trinity is an issue that we all struggle to understand. The thought of God-the Father, God-the Son, and God-the Holy Spirit seems unfathomable. Years ago I began listening to a Christian comedian named Mike Warnke. He explained the trinity "is like a hot cherry pie, fresh from the oven. Let’s say we cut that pie into three equal slices; we would see the lines of demarcation in the crust, but the filling inside flows, knows no demarcation. Thus it is with the Trinity" (Warnke) You see the pie has three parts: the lower crust, the filling, and the upper crust. Without all three parts it is not Cherry pie, it's not complete. So is the God Head. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The God Head, The Holy Trinty, All three are individual yet all three combined are one. This is as close as I can get to understanding the trinity, I hope it helps.

That helps a lot. Sometimes it takes a simple explanation to make a complicated one more clear. Appreciate your input. Thanks again.

Let's try this. God the Father is the concept artist, God the Son is the facilitator, and God the Holy Ghost is the working end of it, the power to help us. All in complete agreement of the program. It's us that get out of sync.

AMEN to us getting out of sync. Sometimes we need a lot of prayer to get back in sync. Thanks to all of you. It is now more clear than ever.
