I'm a much published writer. If there is a secret to getting published I have yet to find it. What I can do is offer some advice to new writers that I have not seen given very often.

1. Be persistent.

2. Accept that rejection is just part of your life as a writer. If between one quarter and one third of your ideas make it into publication you are doing exceptionally well. This is as well as you will ever do. There is no invisible threshold you will cross to a point where everything you do will be accepted.

3. Do not accept rejection asa final judgement. A rejection does not mean that your submission is bad just the the editor did not decide to publish it. Perhaps your submission was too similar to something the editor published recently. Or it can be more broad than that. I once had an article turned down because what I was writing about had happened in London and the editor told me that her boss thought they'd been publishing too many London stories lately.

4. Most rejections come back without comment. If an editor does comment think about what he or she has to say. It is very easy to feel defensive about your work and become angry at criticism - this incidentally is why editors rarely comment on submissions. I have had rejection letters that have actually made me happier than an acceptance would have.

5. Be persistent.
